**Washington D.C. – October 15, 2025** – The United States is seeking support from India and other allies as trade tensions with China escalate over Beijing’s restrictions on rare earth mineral exports. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in an interview with Fox Business on Monday, declared, “This is China versus the world,” accusing China of wielding a “bazooka” against global supply chains.
According to the Hindu Newspaper, Bessent stated that the U.S. expects backing from India and other democracies in Asia, as well as Europe, emphasizing the need to assert sovereignty against China’s command-and-control economy. These issues were brought to light following President Trumps meeting with Argentina’s President Javier Milei in the Cabinet Room of the White House, Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025.
The move comes after President Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Chinese goods in response to the rare earth export restrictions, crucial components for advanced manufacturing and military technology. China controls a significant portion of the global rare earths market, holding approximately 70% of mining and nearly 90% of processing capacity.
Despite the escalating rhetoric, Trump attempted to downplay concerns of a full-blown trade war, stating on Truth Social that China’s economic troubles would “all be fine” and that the U.S. “wants to help China, not hurt it.” This statement followed China’s official response to Trump’s tariff threat.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has also imposed tariffs on India, including additional levies for Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total duties to 50%, which India has deemed “unjustified and unreasonable.”
Secretary Bessent mentioned the possibility of a meeting between President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea later this month.
