Tue Oct 14 07:00:02 UTC 2025: **Gambhir Defends Harshit Rana, Slams Srikkanth’s “Yes Man” Allegation**
**St. John’s, Antigua:** India head coach Gautam Gambhir has fiercely defended young pacer Harshit Rana after former captain Kris Srikkanth alleged the bowler was selected for the upcoming ODI tour of Australia solely due to his relationship with Gambhir. Srikkanth, in a YouTube video, claimed Rana, who previously played under Gambhir at Kolkata Knight Riders, was a “yes man” and only earned his spot through favoritism.
Gambhir, visibly angered by the allegations, called Srikkanth’s comments “shameful” and “unfair” targeting a 23-year-old. Speaking after India’s Test series sweep against West Indies, Gambhir emphasized Rana’s achievements were earned through his own merit.
“It’s so unfair that you are targetting a 23-year-old kid for the sake of your YouTube channel,” Gambhir stated. “Whatever cricket he has played so far, he has played on his own, and he will continue to play on his own.”
Gambhir urged restraint in criticizing young players, highlighting the potential psychological impact of such comments, especially when amplified on social media. He added, “You can criticise me, and I can still handle it. But a 23-year-old boy… is a 23-year-old boy. That is something which is not acceptable.”
He further stressed the moral responsibility of commentators and former players toward Indian cricket, encouraging performance-based criticism rather than personal attacks.
Harshit Rana has represented India in two Tests, five ODIs, and three T20 Internationals since Gambhir assumed the role of head coach last year.
India’s three-match ODI series against Australia begins on October 19.
