Mon Oct 13 18:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Penn State Coaching Vacancy Sparks Matt Rhule Speculation After Franklin Firing

**STATE COLLEGE, PA** – In a shocking move, Penn State University has parted ways with head football coach James Franklin. While the reasons for his dismissal remain unconfirmed, the opening has immediately ignited speculation about potential replacements.

One name rising to the top of the list is Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule. The former Penn State walk-on linebacker and alumnus has strong ties to the university. He played under Joe Paterno in the 1990s and is reportedly close friends with current Penn State Athletic Director Pat Kraft. Kraft previously hired Rhule at Temple in 2012.

Rhule, currently in his third season at Nebraska, has steered the Cornhuskers to a 17-14 record, including a 5-1 start this year that landed them back in the AP Top 25. While he didn’t outright deny interest in the Penn State job, Rhule affirmed his commitment to Nebraska.

“This place is elite,” Rhule stated during his weekly press conference. “I absolutely love it here…I just want us to continue to take the steps needed for us to turn this thing into a beast.”

He also acknowledged his fondness for Penn State, expressing sadness over Franklin’s firing and wishing him well.

Rhule is under contract with Nebraska through 2030, earning $7.5 million annually. A departure before January 1st would require a $5 million buyout from Rhule or his new employer.

Nebraska recently snapped a seven-season losing record streak, finishing 7-6 in 2024. As Rhule focuses on his team’s upcoming game against Minnesota, the coaching carousel is in full swing, leaving fans wondering who will lead the Nittany Lions into the future.
