Mon Oct 13 21:47:55 UTC 2025: ## Mexico Floods Claim at Least 64 Lives, Dozens Still Missing

**Mexico City -** Devastating floods triggered by heavy rains across five Mexican states have left at least 64 people dead and 65 missing, officials announced Monday. The states of Veracruz and Hidalgo have been hardest hit, accounting for the majority of the casualties.

National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) chief Laura Velazquez Alzua, speaking at President Claudia Sheinbaum’s daily briefing, detailed the grim toll: 29 deaths in Veracruz, 21 in Hidalgo, 13 in Puebla, and one in Queretaro. Rescue efforts are underway, but 43 people remain missing in Hidalgo, 18 in Veracruz, and four in Puebla.

The torrential rains, fueled by the remnants of Hurricane Priscilla and Tropical Rainstorm Raymond, caused rivers to swell rapidly, leading to widespread flooding and landslides. Early estimates indicate that approximately 100,000 homes have been affected, with some near rivers completely destroyed.

“There were no meteorological signs that could have indicated to us that the rain was going to be of this magnitude,” said President Sheinbaum, addressing concerns about the effectiveness of Mexico’s alert system.

The hardest-hit areas experienced record rainfall last Wednesday, with Cerro Azul in Veracruz and Cuetzalan del Progreso in Puebla recording 280mm and 286mm of rain, respectively.

Thousands of military troops have been deployed to the affected states to assist with rescue and relief efforts. Governors are coordinating support, and the Mexican Army, Air Force, and National Guard are distributing food and clean water to isolated communities, some accessible only by air.

Electricity officials reported that nearly 400 repair workers have restored power to over 80% of the 263,000 users who lost electricity.
