Sun Oct 12 23:51:00 UTC 2025: ## India’s View: Ukraine Accuses Russia of Sabotage at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant
**New Delhi, October 13, 2025:** Amidst ongoing tensions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Ukraine has accused Russia of deliberately severing the external power line to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), a facility held by Russian forces. According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Moscow’s actions are a calculated attempt to test a reconnection of the plant to the Russian power grid, a move long feared by Kyiv.
The ZNPP, currently not producing electricity, has been relying on emergency diesel generators for almost three weeks to maintain the cooling of nuclear fuel and prevent a potential meltdown. Sybiha, in a statement on X, denounced what he described as an attempted “theft of a peaceful Ukrainian nuclear facility,” accusing Moscow of deceiving the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the international community.
Both sides have traded accusations regarding shelling that allegedly caused the power line outage. The IAEA, the U.N.’s nuclear watchdog, is currently working to re-establish the external link and has repeatedly called for restraint to ensure nuclear safety.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy echoed Sybiha’s concerns, stating that restoring security at the plant is not in Russia’s interests and urged the IAEA to adopt a clearer and more transparent stance.
While there has been no immediate official response from Russia, recent statements from Russian officials present a conflicting picture. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov reportedly stated that there are no current grounds to restart the plant without an external power source, while Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear corporation, had previously indicated preparations were underway to restart operations.
The situation at the ZNPP remains precarious, raising concerns about the potential for a nuclear incident. From India’s perspective, the escalating rhetoric and accusations underscore the need for de-escalation and a peaceful resolution to the conflict, prioritizing the safety and security of nuclear facilities in the region.
