Mon Oct 13 13:32:31 UTC 2025: **Tirunelveli Residents Protest Over Water, Drainage, and Road Conditions**

**TIRUNELVELI, INDIA – October 13, 2025** – Residents of Ward 55 in Tirunelveli staged a protest today, shutting down businesses in Thiyagaraja Nagar, over persistent issues with drinking water supply, unfinished underground drainage work, damaged roads, and overflowing drains. Led by CPI(M) Councillor R. Muthu Subramanian, protestors cited repeated, unanswered petitions to Mayor G. Ramakrishnan and Commissioner Monika Rana as the catalyst for the demonstration.

Key demands include a consistent and adequate drinking water supply through the construction of ground-level sumps and overhead tanks. Residents are also demanding the swift completion of the third phase of the underground drainage project, which has been ongoing since 2020 and causing hazardous road conditions. Immediate road repairs, regular garbage collection, desilting of drainage channels before the upcoming northeast monsoon, and action against stray dogs were also voiced by the protesters.

Residents from multiple neighborhoods, including Thiyagaraja Nagar, Johnson Nagar, and Mallika Colony, participated in the demonstration, highlighting the widespread impact of the infrastructure deficiencies. The protest underscores growing frustration with the local government’s response to essential service needs in the area.
