Sun Oct 12 18:12:06 UTC 2025: **Independent Candidate Blocks AfD Victory in Frankfurt an der Oder Mayoral Election**
**Frankfurt an der Oder, Germany** – In a closely watched election, voters in Frankfurt an der Oder, a city bordering Poland, have elected independent candidate Axel Strasser as their new mayor, thwarting a potential victory for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). Strasser secured a decisive win with 69.8% of the vote, while AfD candidate Wilko Moller garnered 30.2%, according to preliminary results released Sunday. Voter turnout was 49.4%.
This election marks a significant setback for the AfD, which had hoped to secure its first major urban mayoral win. Political analysts had warned that a Moller victory would signal the party’s growing appeal in urban areas, despite its anti-immigrant and Eurosceptic stance.
The victory for Strasser follows a first round of voting on September 21 where he led with 32.4% to Moller’s 30.2%, eliminating candidates from the CDU and SPD. The election also came on the heels of the German Parliament stripping two AfD lawmakers of their parliamentary immunity over separate incidents of alleged defamation and a Nazi salute.
The AfD’s increasingly controversial image is further complicated by its classification as a “confirmed far-right extremist” organization by the Brandenburg domestic intelligence service. This designation subjects the party to surveillance and has reignited debate surrounding a potential ban, drawing criticism from some international figures, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
While the AfD has seen limited success in smaller towns and districts, including Tim Lochner in Pirna (running as an independent) and Robert Sesselmann in Sonneberg, the party has yet to secure leadership in a larger city. The outcome in Frankfurt an der Oder suggests continued resistance to the AfD’s platform in urban centers, despite the city’s challenges related to border checks, immigration, and economic concerns.
