**Kozhikode, October 12, 2025** – A 32-year-old man from Tamil Nadu is alive today thanks to a groundbreaking surgical procedure performed at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode. Prashanth, a resident of Tirupathur, suffered a severe aortic injury in a road accident near Kozhikode while en route to Sabarimala.

According to hospital sources, Prashanth sustained fractured ribs and ankle bones and developed breathing difficulties following the accident. A CT scan revealed a critical injury to his aorta, the main artery carrying blood from the heart, with bleeding into his left lung. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Doctors at the hospital quickly mobilized to perform a complex procedure called Fenestration EndoVascular Aortic Repair (FEVAR). This minimally invasive technique involves inserting a stent graft through a small incision in the groin to repair the damaged aorta. In Prashanth’s case, a specialized hole was created in the stent graft to protect vital side branches of the aorta, a critical step in the FEVAR procedure.

“This procedure is often life-saving in cases of aortic injury,” explained Dr. E. Devarajan, Head of the Department of Radiology. “FEVAR allows us to repair the damaged vessel without the need for open-chest surgery, leading to faster recovery times and reduced risk for the patient.”

The procedure was led by Dr. M.P. Sreejayan, hospital superintendent and Head of the Department of Surgery, and Dr. E. Devarajan. Prashanth was subsequently treated by the Orthopaedics department and has made a full recovery. He was recently discharged and has returned home in good health.
