Fri Oct 10 23:50:00 UTC 2025: ## From Montréal Bus to NBA Champion: Chris Boucher’s Inspiring Journey
**Montréal, QC** – Chris Boucher’s path to becoming an NBA champion is a testament to resilience and unwavering optimism. Before hoisting the Larry O’Brien trophy with the Toronto Raptors, Boucher faced homelessness as a teenager in Montréal. Forced to leave home at 16, he often found refuge from the harsh Canadian winters by riding the 380 Henri-Bourassa city bus all night, using the $5.50 fare for a round trip as a makeshift bed.
“It was too cold to sleep outside,” Boucher recalls. “That’s two hours of being able to feel your toes. Two hours of not shivering so hard that you bite into your tongue.” He would scrounge up bus fare and ride the route, sometimes sleeping, sometimes just dreaming of a better future.
Boucher’s early life was marked by instability. He immigrated from St. Lucia with his mother at age five, only to experience family separation and the challenges of growing up in a tough neighborhood in Montréal-Nord. Despite the constant sirens and violence, Boucher found solace in basketball.
After a period of playing pickup games on blacktop courts, Boucher’s talent caught the eye of coaches at Alma Academy, leading to an opportunity at their prep school. He excelled in junior college, earning Player of the Year honors, and eventually committed to the University of Oregon.
However, a torn ACL threatened to derail his career. Despite going undrafted, the Golden State Warriors signed him to a two-way contract in 2017. After being waived, the Toronto Raptors gave him a chance. This chance, coupled with his unwavering optimism and hard work, led to a G League MVP and Defensive Player of the Year award, and finally, an NBA contract and a championship ring with the Raptors.
Now a member of the Boston Celtics, Boucher remains grateful for his journey and is dedicated to giving back. Through the SlimmDuck Foundation, he provides opportunities and resources to children and underserved communities, focusing on mental health support and mentorship.
“I used to ride the bus around just to get some sleep at night. Just to stay warm,” Boucher reflects. “Now I’m on top of the bus, holding up the NBA trophy?”
Chris Boucher’s story is a powerful reminder that with perseverance and a positive attitude, even the most challenging circumstances can be overcome. He’s proof that a future full of hope and success, for those that remain dedicated, is possible.
