Fri Oct 10 16:26:12 UTC 2025: ## Putin Announces New Strategic Weapons as Nuclear Treaty Talks Stall

**DUSHANBE, Tajikistan** – Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Friday that Russia is developing a new generation of strategic weapons, raising concerns about a potential escalation of the arms race as negotiations with the United States over the extension of the New START nuclear arms treaty remain stalled.

Speaking to reporters at a summit in Tajikistan, Putin downplayed the significance of a U.S. refusal to extend the treaty, which limits each country to 1,550 deployed nuclear warheads and 700 deployed missiles and bombers, but expressed regret over the potential demise of the vital arms control framework.

“If the Americans decide they don’t need it, that’s not a big deal for us,” Putin stated, while simultaneously noting it would be a “shame” to lose the last major arms control agreement between the two countries. The New START Treaty is set to expire in February 2026.

Russia has repeatedly stated its willingness to voluntarily extend the warhead limits defined in the treaty if the U.S. agrees to do the same. Washington has yet to formally respond to the offer, raising questions about its commitment to arms control.

“Will these few months be enough to make a decision on an extension? I think it will be enough if there is goodwill to extend these agreements,” Putin asserted.

Beyond the stalled treaty talks, Putin revealed that Russia is actively developing and testing new-generation nuclear weapons, emphasizing that the arms race is already underway.

Furthermore, for the second time this week, Putin alluded to the possibility of other, unnamed, nations potentially conducting nuclear tests, a practice only carried out by North Korea in the 21st century. He warned that Russia would be compelled to conduct its own tests in response.

“There’s always a temptation to test the effectiveness of the same fuel that’s been in missiles for many, many years,” Putin explained. “If they do it, we’ll do the same.”

While acknowledging that extending the New START Treaty would be beneficial for global security, Putin’s remarks underscore the increasing tensions surrounding nuclear arms control and the potential for a renewed arms race between the world’s two largest nuclear powers. The future of the New START treaty remains uncertain as the expiration date looms, placing pressure on both nations to find common ground and prevent a dangerous escalation.
