**Israel Conducts Airstrikes in Southern Lebanon, Violating Ceasefire**
Beirut – In a stark violation of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire established after the devastating 14-month Israel-Hezbollah war, Israeli forces launched intense airstrikes in southern Lebanon early Saturday morning. The attacks, reported by the Lebanese Health Ministry, resulted in the death of one Syrian citizen and injuries to seven others, including six Lebanese nationals and one additional Syrian.
The pre-dawn strikes targeted the village of Msayleh, focusing on a business selling heavy machinery. The attack destroyed a significant number of vehicles. A passing vegetable truck was also struck during the attack, resulting in the death and injury.
The Israeli military claimed the targeted site was being used to store machinery intended to rebuild infrastructure for the militant group Hezbollah. This explanation reflects Israel’s ongoing accusation that Hezbollah is actively working to restore its capabilities after suffering significant losses during the war.
Since the November ceasefire, Israel has reportedly carried out almost daily airstrikes in Lebanon, resulting in dozens of fatalities. The escalating tensions continue despite calls from the UN Human Rights Chief, Volker Turk, earlier this month for renewed efforts to secure a permanent end to hostilities. Turk reported the verification of 103 civilian deaths in Lebanon since the ceasefire, up to the end of September.
The recent Israel-Hezbollah conflict, triggered in October 2023 by rocket fire from Hezbollah following a deadly Hamas incursion into Israel, resulted in over 4,000 deaths in Lebanon (including hundreds of civilians) and an estimated USD 11 billion in damages, according to the World Bank. Israel suffered 127 fatalities, including 80 soldiers.
