**Barghouti’s Release Remains Sticking Point in Gaza Ceasefire Deal**
**Ramallah, West Bank – October 11, 2025** – As a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas takes effect, a key point of contention remains: the release of prominent Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti. Despite Hamas’s insistence, Israel has refused to include Barghouti, currently serving multiple life sentences for his role in deadly attacks, in the prisoner exchange.
The deal, slated to see Hamas release 20 Israeli hostages by Monday in exchange for 250 Palestinian prisoners and the release of 1,700 people detained in Gaza without charge, has been complicated by the demand for Barghouti’s freedom.
Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera that the group is still in discussions with mediators regarding the release of Barghouti and other high-profile figures.
Israel views Barghouti as a terrorist, but some experts suggest his potential unifying influence is the real reason for their reluctance. Barghouti, an advocate for a two-state solution and a symbol of Palestinian resistance, is seen by many Palestinians as their own Nelson Mandela.
Mouin Rabbani of DAWN argues that Israel is wary of Barghouti’s ability to unite Palestinians and strengthen their institutions, something that would challenge Israel’s current policy of division.
Eyal Zisser of Tel Aviv University echoed this sentiment, stating that Barghouti’s incorruptibility and popularity could strengthen Palestinian institutions, a notion that “terrifies” Israel’s current government.
Barghouti’s situation was highlighted in August when Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir posted a video of himself inside the prison where Barghouti is held, vowing to confront anyone who acts against Israel.
