Tue Oct 07 18:17:20 UTC 2025: **Headline: Carney’s “Red” Gesture Can’t Stop Looming Trade Tensions in Trump Visit**

**Washington D.C.** – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday, striking a seemingly amicable tone amidst ongoing trade disputes. Carney opened the meeting with a lighthearted quip, telling Trump he “wore red” for him as they shook hands.

Despite the friendly exchange, the meeting occurred against a backdrop of escalating trade tensions. Trump imposed a 35% tariff on Canadian imports in August and followed up on Monday with tariffs on all imported heavy trucks starting November 1. These measures add to existing tariffs on lumber, aluminum, steel, and automobiles.

Trump, however, praised Carney as a “great leader” and lauded progress towards a trade deal, albeit without offering any concrete concessions on the tariffs. He downplayed trade conflicts as natural competition between neighbors, while Carney expressed optimism that Canada would secure a favorable agreement with the U.S.

Adding a touch of levity, the two leaders shared a laugh as Trump jokingly referenced Canada becoming the 51st U.S. state, a notion he has publicly floated before.

The meeting comes as Carney faces pressure at home to demonstrate progress in mitigating the impact of Trump’s trade policies. While the USMCA free-trade agreement protects a large portion of Canada’s trade with the U.S., Trump has indicated a desire to revise the agreement. Furthermore, he recently mentioned the possibility of annexing Canada during a speech.

Carney, who entered politics less than a year ago, has positioned himself as a crisis manager capable of navigating the complex relationship with the U.S., Canada’s largest economic partner, where 75% of Canada’s exports are sold. With further negotiations looming, it remains to be seen whether the friendly gestures can translate into tangible solutions for the trade disputes.
