Wed Oct 08 14:35:19 UTC 2025: ## Russia Blames Europe as Hopes Fade for Ukraine Peace Deal Following Trump-Putin Summit

**Moscow:** Any momentum for a resolution to the Ukraine conflict generated by the summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and former US President Donald Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, has largely been undermined, according to a top Russian official.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told Russia’s federal assembly on Wednesday that the promising signs from the historic meeting have since unraveled. Ryabkov placed blame squarely on European nations, accusing them of fueling the conflict and seeking to fight “a war to the last Ukrainian,” as reported by state-owned TASS news agency.

The comments extinguish hopes of a swift resolution to the four-year-long war, a key promise Trump made during his campaign. While Trump initially sought to mediate between Russia and Ukraine, and even pressured Ukraine to make concessions, the Alaska summit failed to yield any tangible progress.

Since then, Trump’s stance has shifted, with the former president expressing disappointment in Putin and recently suggesting Ukraine should reclaim its occupied territory with the support of Europe and NATO.

The Kremlin continues to launch near-daily attacks on civilian areas in Ukraine, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy insists that increased sanctions are the only way to curb Russian aggression. However, Trump has been hesitant to implement further restrictive measures.

The possibility of the US sending long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, as recently suggested by Vice President JD Vance, has further exacerbated tensions. Ryabkov warned that such a move would have “severe” consequences and urged Washington to reconsider.

According to Ryabkov, US-Russian relations are “cracking” at their “foundation,” a situation he attributed to American actions.

Meanwhile, deadly attacks continue. A missile attack in Russia’s Belgorod region killed three people, while Ukraine reported repelling 183 Russian drones targeting rail and energy infrastructure. One attack severely damaged a Ukrainian thermal power plant, while another killed two elderly people in Kherson.

Adding to the international pressure, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has accused Russia of waging a “hybrid warfare” campaign against Europe, citing air incursions, cyberattacks, and damage to undersea cables. She insisted Europe must respond to this “deliberate and targeted grey-zone campaign.”
