**Syria Ceasefire Declared After Clashes Threaten Kurdish Integration Deal**

**Aleppo, Syria** – A ceasefire has been declared in Aleppo between Syrian government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after overnight violence left at least one dead and four injured. The announcement, made by Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra after a meeting with SDF commander Mazloum Abdi, aims to halt fighting “across all fronts and military positions in northern and northeastern Syria.”

The clashes reportedly erupted after SDF fighters allegedly targeted government checkpoints in Aleppo, according to state news agency SANA. SANA further reported that SDF forces fired into residential areas, causing civilian casualties. Residents claimed that shelling killed two security guards and wounded a woman and child.

The SDF has denied attacking checkpoints, claiming its forces withdrew from the area months ago and blaming the violence on government aggression. They accused government military factions of “repeated attacks” against civilians and imposing a siege on Aleppo neighborhoods.

This latest violence jeopardizes a landmark integration deal struck in March, designed to incorporate Kurdish-led forces into Syrian state institutions following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad in December. The agreement would have seen the SDF cede control of key assets, including border crossings and oil fields, to Damascus. The SDF currently controls roughly a quarter of Syrian territory, primarily in the northeast.

Both Damascus and the SDF have accused each other of provocations, leading to heightened tensions. President Ahmed al-Sharaa discussed the agreement’s implementation with US envoy Tom Barrack, emphasizing the need to “safeguard Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The ceasefire comes shortly after Syria’s first parliamentary elections since al-Assad’s ouster, marking a fragile step in the country’s transition. However, the new parliament has already faced criticism due to a lack of representation for women and Christians.
