**TIRUCHI, October 6, 2025** – Eleven fishermen from the Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu sustained injuries in two separate incidents on Sunday night after being allegedly attacked by individuals suspected to be from Sri Lanka. The attacks occurred in the sea east of Kodiyakarai.
According to sources within the Coastal Security Group (CSG), the first incident involved six fishermen from Nambiyar Nagar who were fishing on a registered fiber boat. At approximately 8 p.m. on October 5, two boats carrying eight individuals believed to be Sri Lankan nationals approached and boarded the fishermen’s vessel. The attackers, allegedly armed with iron rods, wooden logs, and knives, assaulted the fishermen, robbing them of a silver chain, an engine, a mobile phone, a GPS device, a light battery, and a walkie-talkie set.
The injured fishermen have been identified as S. Vignesh (28), S. Vimal (26), S. Sugumar (31), V. Thirumurugan (31) V. Murugan (38), and P. Arun (27). They returned to shore early Monday morning and are currently receiving treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam.
In the second incident, five fishermen from Nambiyar Nagar, fishing on an unregistered fiber boat, were also attacked east of Kodiyakarai by a group of eight individuals suspected to be from Sri Lanka. These attackers reportedly stole an engine, a GPS gadget, five mobile phones, and approximately 500 kg of fishing nets.
The injured fishermen in this incident are M. Sasikumar (30), S. Udaysankar (28), S. Sivasankar (25), M. Kriba (29), and R. Kamlesh (19). Four are being treated at the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam, while one has been transferred to Thanjavur for further medical attention.
Authorities are investigating the incidents. These attacks raise concerns about maritime security in the region and the safety of Indian fishermen operating in waters near the Sri Lankan border. The incidents are likely to further strain relations and spark debate regarding fishing rights and border security between India and Sri Lanka.
