Sun Oct 05 03:20:00 UTC 2025: **Seattle Mariners’ Andrés Muñoz Credits Mental Fortitude for All-Star Success**
**SEATTLE, WA** – For Seattle Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz, the mound is a personal battleground. While the blazing speed of his pitches – reaching up to 102 mph – turns heads, the 26-year-old Mexican native insists his success hinges more on mental strength than raw power.
In a recent interview with Sports Illustrated Mexico, Muñoz discussed the unique pressures facing a closer, a role demanding both precision and an almost unnerving calmness under intense pressure. “Emotional control is 100 percent the defining characteristic,” Muñoz stated. “Everyone who gets to the majors has the repertoire. The key is how you handle it mentally, because it’s very easy to let the pressure get to you.”
Muñoz, who earned his second All-Star selection this year and currently ranks fifth in franchise history for saves, emphasized the importance of staying grounded. He revealed a personal technique of self-talk to stay focused when things don’t go perfectly. “I talk to myself,” he admitted. “From the outside, you might think ‘this guy is crazy,’ but I try to motivate myself.”
The right-hander also reflected on his 2020 Tommy John surgery. He credits the extensive recovery period for providing him with the time needed to refine his technique and solidify his mental game. “It gave me time to prepare,” he explained. “I worked for almost two years improving the things I needed to improve.”
Despite the spotlight and the demands of being a professional athlete, Muñoz remains appreciative of the fans. “I get very happy when the fans recognize me and ask for photos,” he said. “We are here because of the fans.”
As for his future, Muñoz expressed his desire to remain with the Mariners, despite potential free agency on the horizon. For now, Muñoz remains focused on each game, delivering thanks to God and honoring his grandfather, his first baseball mentor, after every successful save.
