**Karur, India – October 5, 2025** – A Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the Madras High Court has launched its investigation into the tragic stampede that occurred on September 27 in Karur, claiming the lives of 41 people. The incident took place at a public meeting addressed by Vijay, president of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and a popular actor.

The SIT, led by Inspector-General of Police Asra Garg, visited the site of the stampede in Velusamypuram on the Karur-Erode Highway on Sunday. The team held consultations with local Karur police, who handed over all documents related to the First Information Report (FIR) filed against TVK officials.

IG Garg and the team meticulously examined the area, paying close attention to the location where Vijay addressed the crowd from his campaign vehicle. After the inspection, Mr. Garg confirmed to reporters that the SIT had formally commenced its investigation, but refrained from divulging further details. The SIT comprises two Superintendents of Police, an Additional Superintendent of Police, two DSPs, and five Inspectors.

Police have filed charges against several TVK officials, including V.P. Mathiyazhagan, N. Anand, alias ‘Bussy’ Anand, and C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar, under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Tamil Nadu Property (Prevention of Damage and Loss) Act, 1982. The charges include culpable homicide, attempt to commit culpable homicide, disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant, and endangering the life of others.

So far, V.P. Mathiyazhagan and M.C. Pounraj have been arrested in connection with the incident. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the devastating stampede.
