Fri Oct 03 20:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Manchester Synagogue Attack: Victim Was Shot by Police, Investigation Underway

**Manchester, UK** – The aftermath of Thursday’s terror attack at a synagogue near Heaton Park is unfolding with tragic complexities as investigations reveal that one of the victims, Adrian Daulby, 53, was fatally shot by police officers responding to the incident. The attacker, identified as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, who was out on bail for an alleged rape, was also shot dead by police.

Al-Shamie, believed to have been influenced by extreme Islamist ideology, launched a car ramming and stabbing attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, killing Daulby and Melvin Cravitz, 66, a security guard at the synagogue who bravely tried to prevent the attacker from entering the building. Three other individuals, including Yoni Finlay, who was also attempting to stop Al-Shamie, remain hospitalized.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) believe that Daulby and Finlay were likely in close proximity behind the synagogue door, working to prevent Al-Shamie from gaining entry when they were struck by gunfire. GMP assert that Al-Shamie was unarmed with a firearm and that the only shots fired were from their officers to prevent further harm.

“Police believe that Daulby’s injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action taken by our officers,” a GMP statement said.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has launched an investigation into the fatal shooting, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the use of lethal force by the officers. Ballistics experts are examining the incident, including whether the shots that hit the victims were stray bullets or ricocheted.

In a statement, IOPC Director Emily Barry emphasized the importance of an independent investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the police action.

In the wake of the attack, police have arrested six individuals on suspicion of commission, preparation, and instigation of acts of terrorism. Searches are being conducted at various locations, including a residence in Bolton.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the Jewish community, with many expressing heightened fears for their safety. Zippi, a local resident, expressed concerns about the future of her family in the area, while David Eklouby, from a local security group, emphasized the importance of continued support from neighbors.

Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy was heckled at a vigil for the victims, underscoring the heightened tensions and anxieties within the community.

As the investigation continues, authorities have increased security at Jewish locations across the UK, including an additional 350 officers in London, to reassure and protect Jewish communities from potential copycat attacks.

The families of the victims are grieving, with Daulby’s family remembering him as a “hero” who died saving others, and Cravitz’s family describing him as a kind and caring person. Rabbi Daniel Walker, who witnessed the attack, spoke of the “evil and hate” he encountered as Al-Shamie attempted to force his way into the synagogue.
