Fri Oct 03 14:22:31 UTC 2025: ## News Article: Manchester Synagogue Attack Leaves Two Dead, Several Injured in Suspected Terrorist Incident

**Manchester, UK – October 3, 2025** – A car and knife attack on the Heaton Park Congregation Synagogue in Manchester on Yom Kippur has left two dead and three hospitalized in what police are treating as a terrorist incident. The attack, which occurred on Thursday, October 2nd, saw a man ram a car into pedestrians outside the synagogue before attacking them with a knife.

Police identified the victims as local residents Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66. Tragically, authorities suspect Daulby may have been killed by a police bullet fired as worshippers bravely attempted to prevent the attacker from entering the building. Another hospitalized victim is also believed to have been struck by police gunfire.

The suspect, identified as Jihad Al-Shamie, a 35-year-old British citizen of Syrian descent, was shot and killed by police seven minutes after the initial assault. He was wearing a fake explosive belt.

“This injury may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of police actions,” said Greater Manchester Police Chief Stephen Watson.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the UK’s Jewish community, with Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis condemning the incident as a result of rising antisemitism. “This is the day we hoped we would never see, but which deep down, we knew would come,” he stated.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that Al-Shamie was not previously known to police or the Prevent counterterrorism program. While the motive is still under investigation, police have arrested three individuals in connection with the attack.

The attack has also reignited debate about the role of pro-Palestinian demonstrations in fueling antisemitism. While some argue that slogans used at these protests incite violence, others maintain that they advocate for peace and an end to the suffering in Gaza.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the scene and assured the Jewish community of his commitment to their safety and security. Extra police officers have been deployed across Manchester in response to the attack. Police in London have urged organizers to call off planned protests, however, organizers are refusing to cancel.
