**Shubman Gill Named Captain of Indian ODI Team, Rohit Sharma & Virat Kohli Retained in Squad**
**Ahmedabad, India – October 4, 2025** – In a significant shift in leadership, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) today announced Shubman Gill as the new captain of the Indian One Day International (ODI) team for the upcoming series against Australia. The announcement, made by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, marks a new era for Indian cricket, with Gill, 26, now leading both the Test and ODI squads. Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the vice-captain for the ODI series.
The decision comes as a surprise to many, as Rohit Sharma, the former captain, and Virat Kohli have both been included in the squad for the tour Down Under. This will be their first international appearance in over seven months, offering them a chance to prove their mettle ahead of the home series against South Africa and New Zealand.
“Rohit Sharma has been communicated about change of captaincy. We don’t play too many ODIs and we needed to give the next guy enough time,” said Agarkar, explaining the rationale behind the leadership change.
While Gill takes the reins in ODIs, Suryakumar Yadav continues to lead the T20I squad, with Gill serving as his deputy. Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI series, while Yashasvi Jaiswal makes a return to the squad.
