Fri Oct 03 14:50:06 UTC 2025: ## Nepal’s Gen-Z Revolution: Leaderless Uprising Breaks Cycle of Betrayal but Exacts Heavy Toll

**Kathmandu, Nepal** – A recent youth-led revolution in Nepal, unprecedented in its leaderless nature, has shaken the nation to its core, exposing a long-standing cycle of political betrayal and highlighting the power of collective action. However, this shift towards people’s power came at a devastating cost, leaving the country reeling from widespread violence and economic devastation.

The 48-hour uprising, triggered by a social media ban, saw Gen-Z Nepalis take to the streets without a central figurehead, a stark contrast to previous revolutions that were ultimately undermined by their leaders. This time, the absence of a single leader proved to be the movement’s greatest strength, demonstrating that change could emerge from the collective rather than a charismatic individual.

While figures like Sudan Gurung, head of the youth organization Hami Nepal, emerged as spokespeople after the initial uprising, they did not lead the revolt, underscoring the decentralised nature of the movement.

However, the revolution exacted a terrible price. At least 74 people were killed and over 2,100 injured in clashes that saw the parliament, Supreme Court, and other key government buildings torched. The violence extended beyond the capital, damaging hundreds of local government offices and even targeting media outlets. Economic damage is estimated at a staggering $21 billion, with public infrastructure losses alone nearing half of Nepal’s annual GDP.

Following the collapse of the state machinery, with the Prime Minister resigning and Parliament in ruins, the movement’s decentralized structure became even more apparent. Protest organizers utilized a Discord channel to crowdsource decisions, ultimately leading to the selection of former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as their nominee for interim prime minister.

Despite the chaos and destruction, the revolution exposed a critical truth: power resides with the people. The challenge now lies in preventing a return to the old patterns of centralized leadership and ensuring accountability from future leaders. The key takeaway for Nepal’s youth is to dismantle the cycle of betrayal and foster a vigilant and organized citizenry that never relinquishes its power.

The uprising of September 8th and 9th, 2025, marked the culmination of decades of political frustration and economic hardship. Nepal’s political history is viewed by the author as a cycle of revolt and betrayal, in which each new revolutionary force ultimately becomes the new corrupt establishment. The Gen-Z revolution represents a break from this pattern, urging Nepalis to never again outsource hope, agency, or critical thinking to any self-proclaimed savior.
