New York, NY – “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” known for tackling sensitive social issues, is facing criticism from conservative figures and MAGA supporters over its recent Season 27 premiere. The episode, which featured an ICE raid impacting a key witness in a sexual assault case, has been accused of negatively portraying U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The controversy erupted after the episode depicted Mariska Hargitay’s character, Olivia Benson, investigating a sexual assault where an undocumented maintenance worker, Jorge “George” Ruiz, is a crucial witness but fears deportation due to ICE.
Megyn Kelly slammed the show on “The Megyn Kelly Show,” accusing it of “ripping on ICE” and portraying agents as “dirty b*******.” Kelly highlighted a scene where ICE agents were depicted negatively, alleging the show was pushing “propaganda” despite recent attacks on ICE facilities.
Katie Miller, a conservative podcast host, echoed Kelly’s sentiments on X, questioning why NBC was “condoning” violence against ICE officers with the episode. Her post garnered significant attention, with conservative commentator Tomi Lahren calling the portrayal “disgusting.”
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement to Newsweek condemning the episode, stating: “Not even a week ago, our ICE law enforcement was shot up by a deranged lunatic who wanted to terrorize ICE and not even a week later Law and Order: SVU released an episode that further villainizes our brave ICE law enforcement. NBC and Hollywood elites must stop fanning the flames of division.” She also added, “Our ICE law enforcement work night and day to protect Americans, including by removing rapists and child molesters from America’s streets.”
The backlash has sparked a broader debate online, with some accusing the show of pushing a “woke” agenda and undermining law enforcement. Others have defended the show, with X user @nycdreamer07 posting: “What a joke of a tweet. Get a life and leave tv shows alone.”
NBC has yet to comment on the controversy. New episodes of “Law & Order: SVU” Season 27 air Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on NBC and are available to stream the next day on Peacock.
