Fri Oct 03 00:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Avatar 3 to Feature Return of Iconic Toruk, Director Reveals

**Hollywood, CA** – James Cameron has revealed that “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” the highly anticipated third installment in the Avatar franchise, will feature a major callback to the original 2009 film. In a recent interview with Variety, Cameron disclosed a late-stage decision to reintroduce Toruk, the massive, fearsome bird Jake Sully famously bonds with in the first movie.

Initially, Cameron had omitted Toruk from the storyline of “Fire and Ash,” leading to internal questioning about why the powerful creature wouldn’t be utilized by Jake Sully in future conflicts.

“I’ve always been waiting for the question, ‘Why doesn’t he just go get the big red bird and kill everybody like he used to do?’ Because that doesn’t exist in The Way of Water at all,” Cameron explained.

This internal debate prompted Cameron to reconsider his creative direction, ultimately leading him to re-incorporate Toruk into the film. This meant rewriting parts of the script and even reshooting scenes to accommodate the iconic creature’s return.

“I went, ‘Oh, he’s got to go get the bird.’ Come on! I was saving it for a later film. I was like, “F*** that! He should get the bird. Get the Toruk.” There’s something in Jake’s destiny that requires it, right?” Cameron said, highlighting the importance of Toruk to Jake Sully’s arc.

According to Cameron, the actors were thrilled with the change, stating that it “feels right.”

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” arrives in theaters on December 19, 2025, three years after the release of “Avatar: The Way of Water.” With the first two Avatar films holding the first and third highest-grossing movie positions of all time, “Fire and Ash” will need to surpass $2 billion worldwide to match the success of its predecessors.

The decision to reintroduce Toruk suggests Cameron is looking to tap into the nostalgia and excitement surrounding the original film, potentially providing a boost to “Fire and Ash” at the box office. Fans are sure to be eager to see Jake Sully soar again on the back of the magnificent red bird.
