Chennai residents in Korattur and Padi are expected to see a significant reduction in sewage overflow issues after the completion of a major pipeline replacement project by Metrowater. The ₹106.42-crore project involves replacing an 11.25-km sewer main pipeline from Padi to the Kodungaiyur sewage treatment plant (STP) with a new, larger-capacity cast iron pipeline. The upgraded infrastructure aims to address frequent leaks and overflows caused by the ageing existing pipeline, providing relief to residents who experience sewage-related problems, particularly during the monsoon season. While the project experienced delays, it is nearly completed and is expected to alleviate a significant percentage of complaints regarding sewage issues in the affected areas.

**Chennai Residents to Get Relief from Sewage Woes as Pipeline Project Nears Completion**
**CHENNAI, INDIA – September 27, 2025** – Residents of Korattur and Padi in Chennai are anticipating a significant improvement in sewage management as Metrowater nears completion of a major infrastructure upgrade. The ₹106.42-crore project involves replacing an 11.25-kilometer sewer main pipeline stretching from Padi to the Kodungaiyur sewage treatment plant (STP).
The existing 900-mm diameter pipeline, responsible for collecting and conveying sewage to the STP, had become prone to leaks and overflows due to its age. This led to recurring complaints from residents, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall when streets would become inundated with sewage-mixed water.
“Places like Central Avenue and 18th Street in TNHB Colony faced sewage overflow and stagnation of sewage-mixed rainwater even after a short spell of rain,” explained J. Gopalakrishnan, president of the Federation of Korattur Residents’ Welfare Associations.
The new pipeline, a 1,000-mm diameter cast iron pipe, boasts a significantly increased capacity of 30.5 million liters daily and is designed to reduce overflows from the Korattur sewage pumping station, which was recently upgraded with an odour-control system.
Metrowater officials project a decrease of at least 50% in sewage-related complaints in Korattur and Padi once the work is finished by mid-October.
The project, which began four years ago, experienced delays due to challenges such as navigating rail lines, culverts, and busy arterial roads. However, nearly 98% of the work is now complete. The pipeline runs along the Inner Ring Road, Madhavaram roundabout, and GNT Road, connecting Padi to the STP.
The completion of this vital infrastructure project promises a cleaner and healthier environment for thousands of Chennai residents and represents a significant step forward in the city’s efforts to improve its sewage management system.
