**Cochin University Auditorium Repairs Begin Nearly Two Years After Tragedy**

**KOCHI, KERALA – September 27, 2025** – Construction has commenced on renovations to the open-air auditorium at Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), nearly two years after a stampede claimed the lives of four individuals, including three students, on November 25, 2023. The tragedy occurred prior to a scheduled music event, highlighting critical design flaws in the venue.

The renovations, guided by a four-member technical committee established by the University Syndicate, aim to address the shortcomings identified in the aftermath of the incident. “Once the works are completed, the facility will be made available for holding various programmes approved by the varsity,” stated Arun A.U, Registrar of Cusat. “The works were initiated after getting necessary clearance from the Kochi City police.”

Key changes include restricting vehicular traffic in front of the auditorium, incorporating that space within the renovated area, and resolving congestion at a nearby junction by modifying the adjacent triangular park.

The technical panel’s recommendations focus heavily on improved crowd control and accessibility. Specifically, the rise and tread of steps in the middle section will be adjusted, handrails will be added, and landings will be widened. Side entrances will be converted into ramps to enhance accessibility for individuals with disabilities, extending to the stage.

Furthermore, emergency exits are being prioritized with pathways cleared to facilitate ambulance access. These modifications are intended to ensure a safer and more accessible venue for future university events.
