**Kochi Stadium Gears Up for Argentina Friendly Amidst Infrastructure Concerns**

**Kochi, India – September 27, 2025** – The Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor is racing against time to prepare for an international friendly match featuring World Cup champions Argentina this November. The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is handing over the stadium to the Sports Kerala Foundation (SKF) to oversee vital infrastructural upgrades before the high-profile game.

Hector Daniel Cabrera, venue manager of the Argentina Football Association (AFA), recently inspected the stadium’s facilities and security, accompanied by Kerala Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman. While the GCDA has already invested over ₹5 crore in maintenance work, including painting and structural repairs, significant work remains. Drainage improvements and sealing leaks in the roof are still underway.

“SKF will carry out the necessary infrastructure upgrades based on a detailed plan, subject to our approval,” stated a GCDA source.

A major point of contention involves the temporary relocation or closure of shops located within the stadium complex. While GCDA has not yet finalized arrangements, the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium Shop Owners Association indicated they have received no official notice. President P.R. Jijikumar stated they are scheduled to meet with the GCDA chairman to discuss the duration of potential closures. Traders have previously sought legal recourse when faced with extended closures.

SKF officials have emphasized the urgency of the project, aiming to complete all upgrades by November 10. These upgrades are being coordinated with Reporter Broadcasting Company (RBC), the sponsors of Argentina’s visit, as well as the Kerala Football Association and the All India Football Federation.

RBC Managing Director Anto Augustine said the AFA venue manager was generally satisfied with the turf’s condition, though minor enhancements are needed. “We are in the process of finalizing a comprehensive checklist of safety and security protocols,” he added.

The event promises to be a major draw for football fans in India. However, concerns remain regarding the stadium’s readiness and the impact on local businesses, making the coming weeks critical for ensuring a successful and safe event.
