**Thoothukudi, September 27, 2025** – The Thoothukudi Corporation is stepping up efforts to combat the growing stray dog population and the associated risk of rabies with a comprehensive anti-rabies vaccination program. An anti-rabies vaccination camp was held at the new bus stand on Saturday, spearheaded by Mayor N.P. Jegan and Corporation Commissioner S. Priyanka in collaboration with the Animal Husbandry Department.

The initiative, which began in August, has already seen the vaccination of 350 dogs throughout the city, including both stray and domesticated animals. At the bus stand camp, 80 dogs received vaccinations, with 21 being identified as strays.

“Conducting drives area wise within the city has increased the number of dogs being covered,” stated Mayor Jegan Periyasamy. “These drives are planned in such a way that covers most parts of the city, starting around 10 a.m. and continuing until 4 p.m.” He further emphasized the corporation’s commitment by highlighting the ₹17 payment provided to the Animal Husbandry Department for each vaccination administered.

Beyond vaccinations, the corporation is also focused on providing shelter for stray animals. “A shelter in Tharuvaikulam dumping yard is already in operation,” Mayor Jegan explained, “and another has been planned in the cemetery area, which is yet to be taken over by the non-governmental organisation identified for the purpose.”
