**Beijing, China** – Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has officially launched its highly anticipated 17 series smartphones, showcasing a bold new design direction and a unique feature: a secondary display integrated into the rear camera module. The 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, the flagship models in the series, sport a 2.5 x 1.8 inch “Dynamic Back Display” that can display the time, notifications, run some games and even act as a viewfinder for selfies using the main camera.

While not the first phone to experiment with a rear screen, Xiaomi aims to provide the features of a folding phone, but in the more widely adopted candy-bar package. Reviewers note that the second screen’s usefulness varies, but its refreshing to see the company make an effort at providing something new.

The design of the 17 series departs from the company’s previous circular camera module, opting instead for a rectangular lozenge with two prominent lenses rising out of the touchscreen. The phones feel similar in hand to its competitors, such as Google’s Pixel 10 Pro XL and Apple’s iPhone, due to its flat screen and metal frame.

Functionality of the Dynamic Back Display is tailored and limited. While a global edition is not yet available, functionality for the Chinese model includes time and notifications, customizable themes and pets, real-time updates, music controls, and a “pin” function that allows users to display QR codes for a contact-free experience.

Beneath the surface, the 17 Pro and Pro Max are spec beasts, featuring Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, up to 16 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage. The main screens also incorporate Xiaomi’s new M10 display technology, known for its sharpness and power efficiency. Battery life is another key area where the new models shine. The Pro Max has a 7,500-mAh battery, while the 17 Pro has a 6,300-mAh battery, which can both last for two days between charges.

The camera setup includes a 50-megapixel trio. The Pro Max boasts a Prism Periscope Telephoto lens with 5X optical zoom and 30-cm macro photography capabilities.

The 17 series also incorporates other flagship features, including Wi-Fi 7, easy interconnectivity with Macs and iPads, and Xiaomi’s Hyper XiaoAi personal assistant, which proactively suggests apps and services based on user behavior.

Xiaomi hopes that, by embedding the secondary screen in the camera bump, they can improve overall utility for its user base.
