**Vodafone Idea Challenges Additional ₹5,000 Crore AGR Demand in Supreme Court**
**NEW DELHI, September 26, 2025** – Vodafone Idea (VI) has filed a petition with the Supreme Court of India challenging an additional demand of over ₹5,000 crore from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) related to Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues for the 2016-2017 period. The DoT urged the court to hear the case after the Dussehra break, with Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requesting a hearing date of October 6th, the day the court re-opens.
VI argues that its AGR liabilities have already been calculated and finalized, and the DoT’s additional demand is unwarranted. The company is seeking a comprehensive re-assessment and reconciliation of AGR dues for the period leading up to FY 2016-17, urging the court to quash the additional demand.
This legal challenge comes shortly after the Supreme Court rejected petitions from Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, and Tata Teleservices seeking relief on interest and penalties related to AGR liabilities. Chief Justice B.R. Gavai has previously emphasized the need for finality in the long-standing AGR dispute. Just a year ago, the Supreme Court dismissed a curative petition filed by telcos against a 2019 judgment upholding the DoT’s demand for approximately ₹92,000 crore in AGR dues.
The Supreme Court agreed to hear the plea on October 6th after the Dussehra break. The case is expected to have significant implications for VI, which has been facing financial constraints.
