**CHENNAI, September 25, 2025** – The Highways Department has announced a significant road widening project in Tiruvallur district, aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing road safety. The project will focus on three key roadways in the area, including the road behind the Ennore Thermal Power Plant.

The Chepakkam to Mouthambedu road, a 4.6 km stretch currently a single-lane, will be widened to two lanes at a cost of ₹10.50 crore. Officials believe that the expanded road will serve as a crucial alternative route during peak traffic hours and emergencies.

Additionally, 2.8 km of the Chinna Kavanam to Perumbedu Road, of the total 8km length, will be widened from 5.5 meters to 7 meters. This upgrade, costing ₹3.21 crore, is expected to significantly improve access to the Balasubramaniaswamy Temple in Perumbedu, which attracts large crowds on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and during festivals.

The Athipattu Railway Station Road will also undergo expansion, increasing its width to 5.5 meters for a 1.6 km stretch. This project is estimated to cost ₹1.67 crore.

“These improvements are crucial for the growing industrial area and will provide a safer and more efficient transportation network for local residents and businesses,” stated a Highways Department official.

Tenders for the projects have already been issued, and preliminary work, including marking and grubbing, is slated to commence by December. The widening of these roads marks a significant investment in Tiruvallur’s infrastructure, promising to alleviate traffic bottlenecks and improve connectivity in the region.
