**Giants’ Rafael Devers on Track for Rare 163-Game Season**
LOS ANGELES – San Francisco Giants infielder Rafael Devers is on the verge of achieving a rare feat in modern baseball: playing in more than 162 regular-season games. Thanks to a midseason trade from the Boston Red Sox to the Giants, Devers has the opportunity to appear in 163 games this season, provided he plays in the Giants’ remaining eight contests.
This unusual situation arises from Devers playing 73 games for the Red Sox before being traded to San Francisco, where he has already appeared in 82 games. If he finishes the season, he would become the first player to play more than 162 games since Justin Morneau in 2008, when a tiebreaker game was needed. Only 29 players since 1961 have played in 163 or more games in a season, and the last player to do so as a result of a trade was Todd Zeile in 1996.
Giants manager Bob Melvin expressed excitement about the possibility, stating, “We might have to try to make that happen. He just likes to play baseball. He really does.” Melvin also praised Devers’ overall contribution to the team, noting his production in walks, runs, RBIs, and overall performance since joining the Giants.
Devers’ potential achievement is even more noteworthy considering he wasn’t fully healthy upon his arrival in San Francisco, battling a groin injury. However, he has since overcome the injury and become a key player for the Giants, making his first career appearance at first base on July 22.
