**Kannur, India – September 25, 2025** – The State Crime Branch has officially taken charge of the investigation into the escape of Govindachamy, a convicted rapist and murderer, from Kannur Central Jail. The investigation, launched following an order from the State Police Chief two weeks prior, aims to uncover potential security failures and any assistance Govindachamy may have received in his jailbreak on July 25, 2025.
Govindachamy, who was apprehended just hours after his escape by the Kannur Town police, is currently incarcerated at Viyyur Jail in Thrissur. The Crime Branch has requested court authorization to interrogate him within the prison walls. Prison staff and fellow inmates will also be questioned as part of the investigation.
Kannur Crime Branch SP P. Balakrishnan Nair, who received the case documents from Kannur Town Inspector Sreejith Koderi, is leading the probe. The investigation will focus on how the convict managed to break through his cell’s iron bars, whether he had any accomplices, and if the initial police investigation was flawed.
Govindachamy is serving a life sentence for the 2011 rape and murder of a 23-year-old woman on the Ernakulam-Shornur passenger train. His initial death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment.
