Tue Sep 23 00:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Maryland Announces Energy Rebates Amid Republican Criticism

**RANDALLSTOWN, MD (WBFF) -** Governor Wes Moore announced a $200 million energy rebate program on Monday aimed at easing the burden of rising energy costs for Maryland residents. Speaking from the Randallstown Community Center, Moore explained that the initiative, stemming from the Next Generation Energy Act, will provide every Maryland household with two $40 utility bill credits, one expected this fall and another in the winter when energy consumption is highest.

“The reason we are so passionate about the issue of energy affordability is because we hear from our constituents about it every day,” Gov. Moore stated. “Marylanders are deeply frustrated, and their frustration is justified.”

Senate President Bill Ferguson echoed Moore’s sentiments, emphasizing the General Assembly’s commitment to lowering utility bills through affordable and reliable energy solutions. He highlighted the rebate as a “critical part of that goal.”

However, the plan drew immediate criticism from Maryland Senate Republicans. Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey called the announcement an “admission of failure” rather than a solution to the underlying energy crisis.

Republicans argue that the rebate is merely a Band-Aid and that Democratic leadership is neglecting the root causes of high utility rates, which they attribute to prioritizing the demands of environmental activists. Senate Minority Whip Justin Ready echoed this sentiment, urging the state to address the core issues driving up energy prices.

Despite Republican opposition, Governor Moore and state leaders are moving forward with the rebate program, emphasizing their dedication to providing relief to Marylanders struggling with rising energy costs.
