Tue Sep 23 01:20:00 UTC 2025: **News Article: West Bengal Braces for Rain-Soaked Durga Puja as Low-Pressure Systems Brew**

**Kolkata, India** – West Bengal is gearing up for a potentially soggy Durga Puja as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts increased rainfall across the state, triggered by a series of low-pressure systems developing in the Bay of Bengal.

The forecast indicates that South Bengal will experience intermittent thunderstorms with lightning, with coastal districts likely to see scattered heavy rainfall on September 23rd. The intensity of rainfall is expected to increase significantly from September 26th.

“A low-pressure area is likely to form over the northeast and east-central Bay of Bengal around September 25th,” reports Ayan Ghoshal, a local meteorologist. “This system, along with another cyclonic circulation anticipated around September 30th, could bring heavy rainfall to several districts of South Bengal, potentially disrupting the Durga Puja festivities from Chaturthi onwards.”

The IMD warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall on the night of Navami. Before the heavy rainfall arrives, Muhalaya day will be partly cloudy, with possible light to moderate rain in some areas.

Specific warnings have been issued for several districts. Today, nine districts in South Bengal, including East and West Medinipur, North and South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Purulia, Birbhum, Nadia, and Murshidabad, are likely to experience thunderstorms and light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph. On Tuesday, South 24 Parganas, East, and West Medinipur can expect heavy rainfall.

North Bengal is also under a heavy rainfall alert for the next 48 hours, with Darjeeling and its surrounding five districts bracing for scattered heavy rainfall and gusty winds. Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts are under an “Orange” alert for extremely heavy rainfall today, while Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar districts are under a “Yellow” alert for heavy rainfall. Rainfall is expected to decrease from Saturday onwards.

Kolkata residents can expect a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain, providing temporary relief from the high humidity levels. The maximum temperature recorded yesterday was 32.4 degrees Celsius, with humidity ranging between 81% and 94%.

Authorities are advising residents to take necessary precautions and stay updated on the latest weather forecasts. While the Mahalia day (September 24) is expected to be dry in the mornings, the IMD predicts rain later in the day.
