Mon Sep 22 04:46:58 UTC 2025: ## India’s Education Minister Highlights National Education Policy, Addresses Key Concerns
**New Delhi – September 22, 2025** – Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan engaged in a comprehensive discussion with *The Hindu*’s Political Editor Nistula Hebbar and Senior Deputy Editor A.M. Jigeesh today at the India International Centre as part of *The Hindu*’s Mind Series.
Mr. Pradhan championed the National Education Policy (NEP), calling it both “rooted in Indian ethos” and “futuristic.” He emphasized the policy’s focus on skill-based education, multidisciplinary learning, and education in one’s mother tongue. He stressed that NEP does not mandate specific languages, instead leaving language choices to the student, particularly in Hindi-speaking states, ensuring inclusivity while requiring two of the three languages to be Indian from Classes 6-10.
Addressing concerns regarding the recent U.S. H-1B visa fee hike, Mr. Pradhan expressed confidence in Indian institutions and academics, highlighting India’s increasing global standing and innovation, as evidenced by ISRO’s Chandrayaan mission.
The Minister also addressed the sensitive topic of reservations, affirming their constitutional importance for uplifting deprived sections of society. He acknowledged the concerns of general category students, stating that “no section of society should feel isolated” and citing Prime Minister Modi’s initiative to provide reservation for the economically weaker sections of the upper caste.
In response to questions about rising student suicides, Mr. Pradhan highlighted the need to teach students in their language of choice, even in technical institutions, as recommended by the NEP, to alleviate linguistic challenges. He also advocated for a multi-pronged approach to address dropout rates, aiming for 100% enrollment through Standard 12, achieved by making education more appealing and less intimidating.
Furthermore, the Minister defended the Governor’s traditional role as head of educational institutions, criticizing states attempting to dilute this authority. He also reiterated the democratic nature of the BJP, assuring that the process for electing the next party president would be followed appropriately. In addition to praising former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, expressing faith in BJP’s long-term prospects in Odisha.
In a separate development, Janata Dal (United) working president Sanjay K. Jha affirmed Nitish Kumar as the NDA’s Chief Ministerial candidate for Bihar, contrasting with the opposition’s uncertain leadership.
The interview underscores the government’s commitment to the NEP and its ambition to position India as a global leader in education and innovation, while addressing critical social issues.
