Sat Sep 20 23:01:12 UTC 2025: ## Kyiv Presses US for Stricter Sanctions as Eastern Europe Braces for Russian Aggression

**Kyiv, Ukraine -** As Russia intensifies its attacks on Ukraine and conducts brazen airspace incursions into neighboring NATO countries, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly next week to advocate for tougher sanctions against Moscow.

Zelenskyy’s push for enhanced sanctions comes amid growing anxiety in Eastern Europe, where nations are scrambling to bolster defenses in response to recent Russian provocations. Poland and Romania have reported drone incursions, while Estonia claims three Russian fighter jets violated its airspace on Friday.

“We now expect strong sanctions steps from the United States as well – Europe is doing its part,” Zelenskyy stated on X, referring to the EU’s recently unveiled 19th sanctions package. The package aims to restrict Russia’s access to energy resources, target the infrastructure of its “shadow fleet,” and address the use of cryptocurrency.

Trump has indicated a willingness to impose “major sanctions” contingent on all NATO allies agreeing to a complete embargo on Russian oil. Zelenskyy also plans to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine post-truce to deter future Russian aggression. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has remained steadfast against the presence of Western troops in Ukraine.

The escalation comes after a night of intense Russian attacks on Ukraine, with reports of 40 missiles and 580 drones deployed in what is described as one of the largest barrages since the start of the war. At least three people were killed and dozens wounded in the attacks.

In response to the escalating tensions, NATO countries along Europe’s eastern flank are taking preventative measures. Poland deployed its and allied aircraft in a “preventative operation” to safeguard its airspace following Russian strikes near the Polish border. The UK dispatched fighter jets for their first NATO air defense sortie to patrol Polish skies under the “Eastern Sentry” mission.

While Russia’s Ministry of Defence denied the airspace violation in Estonia, Estonian officials maintain that radar and visual confirmation support the incident. An investigation is underway to determine whether the violation was intentional.
