Sun Sep 21 14:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Virginia Tech Dominates Wofford in First Game After Coach’s Firing
**BLACKSBURG, Va. –** Kyron Drones delivered a stellar performance, throwing for 307 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for two scores, leading Virginia Tech to a decisive 38-6 victory over Wofford on Saturday. The win marks the Hokies’ (1-3) first game since the university’s administration dismissed head coach Brent Pry on September 14th.
Offensive Coordinator Philip Montgomery, now serving as interim head coach, praised his team’s resilience during a tumultuous week. “It’s been an emotional week,” Montgomery said. “I couldn’t be more proud of our players. They went out and earned it.”
Virginia Tech seized control early, establishing a 21-0 lead in the first half against the FCS Terriers (0-4). Drones connected with 11 different receivers throughout the game, including touchdown passes to Devin Alves (19 yards) and Ayden Greene (18 yards) in the second quarter. He later added two rushing touchdowns to solidify the Hokies’ dominance. The team amassed a season-high 461 total yards.
Wofford struggled to generate offense, totaling only 141 yards. Quarterback Jayden Whitaker threw for 142 yards but was intercepted once. “It had a lot to do with them, and we’ve got a lot of young guys out there,” said Wofford coach Shawn Watson.
The game was overshadowed by the recent coaching change and the subsequent uncertainty surrounding the program. Up to 12 Virginia Tech players were absent from the game, potentially contemplating their futures with the transfer portal now open. Montgomery addressed the situation, stating, “We’re going through all of that with all of them. It’s going to be us talking about it and us working through it.”
Looking ahead, Wofford will host Western Carolina on October 4th. Virginia Tech faces a crucial road test as they open conference play against NC State on Saturday. This victory offers a glimpse of hope for the Hokies as they navigate a season in transition.
