**Tigers DFA Morton Amidst September Slide, Call Up Rainey**
**Detroit, MI -** The Detroit Tigers, clinging to a narrow lead in the American League Central, have designated veteran right-hander Charlie Morton for assignment. The move comes as the team struggles to maintain its grip on the division amidst a disappointing September performance.
Morton, 41, acquired at the trade deadline from the Orioles in exchange for Minor League pitcher Micah Ashman, posted a 2-3 record with a 7.09 ERA in nine starts for Detroit. His recent outing against the Braves proved particularly costly, allowing six runs in just 1 1/3 innings. Morton’s struggles have contributed to Detroit’s 5-12 record this month, which has seen their once commanding 9 1/2 game lead in the AL Central dwindle to a single game over the Cleveland Guardians.
To fill the roster spot, the Tigers have called up right-handed reliever Tanner Rainey from Triple-A Toledo. Rainey, 32, struggled with a 10.57 ERA in the Major Leagues with the Pirates earlier this year. However, since signing with Detroit on July 18, he has demonstrated significant improvement with Toledo, posting a 2.66 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 23 2/3 innings. Rainey will report to the team immediately and is expected to be available out of the bullpen. The Tigers hope that Rainey’s recent success in the minor leagues will translate to improved performance in the majors.
