Sun Sep 21 10:53:50 UTC 2025: ## Kozhikode Grapples with Alarming Surge in Road Rage Incidents

**KOZHIKODE, INDIA – September 21, 2025** – An unsettling increase in road rage incidents, often involving violent confrontations, is prompting urgent action from law enforcement in the Kozhikode district. Public complaints across both urban and rural areas highlight a disturbing trend of minor disputes rapidly escalating into physical altercations.

Recent incidents paint a grim picture. In one instance near Valayam, a family traveling in a car was allegedly attacked by a group of over 15 people after their vehicle reportedly brushed against an SUV. The victims, including a seven-month-old infant who sustained a minor eye injury from broken glass, were allegedly pulled from their vehicle and assaulted. A similar attack targeted a wedding-bound family just kilometers away, leading to the registration of a police case against ten individuals. Other reported incidents include the assault of a civil defense member and the arrest of a private bus driver caught driving under the influence of cannabis.

“These incidents reflect a broader issue of declining road discipline,” explains a Deputy Superintendent of Police, formerly involved in traffic reformation initiatives. “Common factors include aggression following minor collisions, mob mentality, retaliatory behavior, and impaired driving.” The lack of clear evidence, particularly digital recordings, often poses a significant challenge for investigators.

While data from the State Crime Records Bureau indicates a 10% decrease in road accident fatalities compared to 2023, the spike in road rage is raising serious concerns. “The compiled figures will be available soon for necessary actions,” officers revealed.

Authorities are focusing scrutiny on private buses, with a senior Motor Vehicles Department officer emphasizing ongoing field-level enforcement. However, the officer stressed that legal action alone is insufficient without public cooperation.

Concerns are also being raised regarding the slow progress in improving surveillance infrastructure, such as camera installations in vulnerable areas. Furthermore, limited scrutiny of public and private transportation drivers, coupled with slow incident response times, are exacerbating the problem.

Manoj Babu, a retired Traffic Police Officer instrumental in implementing model traffic projects in Kozhikode, calls for a comprehensive strategy. “A better roadmap, developed with the cooperation of various enforcement squads and civic authorities, is the first step to address the road rage concerns. We are yet to have it.” Babu emphasizes that the increasing traffic and urban density necessitate a thorough review of existing enforcement strategies and the adoption of improved preventative measures.

The rise in road rage in Kozhikode underscores the urgent need for a multi-faceted approach involving stricter enforcement, improved infrastructure, and enhanced public awareness to restore road safety and discipline.
