**Mumbai – September 21, 2025:** Nanded district in Maharashtra has become the first in the state to achieve 100% compensation for farmers who suffered devastating crop losses due to heavy rains and natural calamities this monsoon season. State Agriculture Minister Dattatray Bharne announced that the distribution of ₹553.48 crore (approximately $70 million USD) in relief funds will commence on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The unprecedented move provides significant relief to nearly 774,000 farmers in Nanded, where over 648,533 hectares of crops were damaged by incessant rainfall. Reports indicate that approximately 86% of the total Kharif sowing area was affected, with major losses reported in soybean, cotton, tur, moong, urad, jowar, vegetables, turmeric, and banana crops.
In addition to the primary compensation package, an additional ₹20.81 crore has been allocated to address the recovery of eroded and silt-affected lands.
Minister Bharne emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring swift and transparent distribution of the funds. Lists of impacted farmers are being uploaded to a government portal, and the sanctioned compensation will be directly deposited into their bank accounts.
The compensation rates have been set at ₹8,500 per hectare for rain-fed crops, ₹17,000 per hectare for irrigated crops, and ₹22,500 per hectare for horticulture crops.
“The government is working on a war footing to ensure maximum assistance reaches farmers,” Minister Bharne stated, highlighting the administration’s dedication to supporting the agricultural sector in Maharashtra.
Prior to this announcement, the government had sanctioned ₹73.54 crore in the first phase of relief for crop damage in June and July, covering districts including Nagpur, Wardha, Chandrapur, Hingoli, Solapur, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. The compensation for Nanded marks the second phase of relief efforts for heavy rains since August. Minister Bharne assured that announcements for other affected districts are forthcoming.
This achievement in Nanded serves as a significant benchmark for addressing the challenges faced by farmers in the face of increasingly frequent and severe weather events. The government’s swift action and commitment to direct benefit transfer are expected to provide much-needed financial stability and support to the agricultural community in the region.
