**Trump Administration Ends Protected Status for Syrians, Threatens Deportation**
**Washington, D.C.** – The Trump administration announced Friday that it is ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syria, giving over 6,000 Syrian nationals currently residing in the United States just 60 days to leave the country voluntarily or face arrest and deportation.
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, Tricia McLaughlin, stated that “Conditions in Syria no longer prevent their nationals from returning home.” She further added, “Syria has been a hotbed of terrorism and extremism for nearly two decades, and it is contrary to our national interest to allow Syrians to remain in our country.”
The Federal Register notice posted Friday indicated that after the 60-day grace period, any Syrian national admitted under TPS who has not begun their voluntary removal proceedings will be subject to arrest and deportation.
This action is part of President Trump’s broader effort to curtail legal status for migrants in the U.S., arguing that deportation protections have been overused and many migrants no longer warrant them. The administration has previously ended TPS for citizens of Venezuela, Honduras, Haiti, Nicaragua, Ukraine, and others.
Democrats and migrant advocacy groups have condemned the decision, arguing that TPS recipients could be forced to return to dangerous environments and that their removal will negatively impact the U.S. economy, as many employers rely on their labor. They say that conditions in Syria remain too unstable for safe return.
