**Freeze Warning Issued for Parts of Northern Maine as Temperatures Plunge This Weekend**

Augusta, ME – Mainers should prepare for a chilly weekend as overnight temperatures are expected to dip into the 30s, with some deeper valleys potentially seeing lows in the upper 20s. The National Weather Service has issued freeze warnings for northern Oxford, Franklin, and Somerset counties tonight, while frost advisories are in effect for areas just south of those counties.

Tonight, communities like Fryeburg, Berlin, and Rumford are forecast to see temperatures near freezing, with many inland locations at risk of frost formation. Officials remind residents that frost can form when temperatures fall to around 36 degrees. Sunday morning will bring similar conditions, potentially even a degree or two colder, with low to mid-30s expected, especially away from the coast.

“September is a common month for frost across the north, interior York and Cumberland counties,” said a local meteorologist. “Along the coast, it’s more common in October.”

While the earliest freeze on record in Maine occurred on August 17th, 1979, in Rangeley, and September 1st, 2002, in Fryeburg, most areas typically experience their first freeze in mid-September.

Gardeners looking to extend the growing season are advised to take precautions. Experts recommend watering the soil, covering plants with sheets, and clustering plants together, ideally near the house, or bringing them indoors if possible.
