**UK High Court Upholds Deportation in Test Case for “One In, One Out” Migration Scheme**

**London, UK** – A 25-year-old Eritrean man will be deported to France after the UK High Court rejected his bid to temporarily block his removal. This case served as a critical test for the recently implemented “one in, one out” migration scheme between the UK and France.

The man, who arrived in the UK in August after crossing the English Channel, argued he faced forced conscription in Eritrea and had been trafficked, warranting asylum. However, Judge Clive Sheldon ruled against him, citing inconsistencies in his testimony that undermined his credibility.

The deportation, scheduled for Friday, coincides with the Home Office actively implementing the new agreement. A man from India, who also arrived by small boat in August, was deported to France on Thursday via commercial flight, marking the first official transfer under the scheme.

The “one in, one out” policy dictates that for every irregular migrant returned to France, the UK will accept a recognized asylum seeker with existing family ties in the UK. The UK government defends the policy as a fair and balanced approach to reducing unauthorized migration.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, standing alongside US President Donald Trump, hailed the Indian man’s deportation as “proof of concept” that the deal works, stating the need to scale up the scheme.

However, the agreement has drawn sharp criticism from UK charities. Griff Ferris of the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants called the policy cruel and an attempt to appease the far-right. The scheme comes amid rising anti-immigrant sentiment, as demonstrated by a large far-right protest in London over the weekend.

Thousands of migrants have crossed the English Channel to reach the UK in recent years, with at least 23 deaths recorded this year alone. Starmer has made stopping the small boat crossings central to his government’s agenda.
