BROOKLYN, NY – Touted as a potential superstar and likened to Victor Wembanyama, Seattle Storm rookie Dominique Malonga faced initial struggles after being drafted No. 2 overall. After a slow start to the season where she averaged just 4.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in limited minutes, Malonga refused to be discouraged. The 19-year-old focused on learning from veterans, studying film, and intensifying her training.
“I’m not a dreamer,” she stated, “I’m a realist.”
Her dedication paid off in the second half of the season. Malonga erupted, becoming the youngest player in WNBA history to reach multiple milestones, including 100 field goals and a double-double. In the 20 games following the All-Star break, she averaged 11.4 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds, shooting an impressive 57.6% from the field.
Point guard Skylar Diggins praised Malonga’s growth, stating, “I love playing with her. I’m glad to see her thrive.”
While Malonga’s individual achievements soared, the Storm faced playoff uncertainty. In the face of this, Malonga stepped up, providing crucial energy and skill from the bench. Her impact became undeniable, with Coach Noelle Quinn placing increasing reliance on the rookie.
Now, with their season on the line after a Game 1 loss to the Las Vegas Aces, the Storm desperately need Malonga to continue her stellar play. Her 12 points and 11 rebounds in Game 1 weren’t enough. As she said after a tough game early in the season, “Just you wait.” Now is the time for that promise to materialize.
