**Dallas Cowboys Legend D.D. Lewis Passes Away at 79**
**DALLAS, TX (September 18, 2025) -** The Dallas Cowboys and the football world are mourning the loss of former linebacker D.D. Lewis, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79. Lewis, a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Cowboys, was a key member of the famed “America’s Team” during their dominant run in the 1970s.
Prior to his illustrious NFL career, Lewis was a standout player at Mississippi State, earning All-American honors and being named the SEC Defensive Player of the Year in 1967. Drafted by the Cowboys in the sixth round of the 1968 NFL Draft, Lewis quickly established himself as a formidable force on the Dallas defense.
Over his 13 seasons with the Cowboys, Lewis appeared in five Super Bowls, winning titles in Super Bowl VI and XII. He amassed impressive statistics, including 15.5 sacks, 14 fumble recoveries, and eight interceptions in 186 career games.
“D.D. was a great player,” said former Cowboys star Thomas Henderson. “He kept me from the weakside because he played it so well. D.D. was a tough guy and I wanted his job Day 1, but I never could get it because he played [coach Tom] Landry’s defense and I couldn’t interrupt that. So I ended up on the strong side, which was better for me because I got to box every down.”
Mississippi State University released a statement on Wednesday honoring Lewis’s legacy. He was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 1987 and the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.
“We mourn the passing of Bulldog legend D.D. Lewis,” the statement read. “An All-SEC standout and 1967 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, he played 13 years with the Dallas Cowboys, appeared in five Super Bowls, won two, and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2001.”
Lewis was known for his passion and commitment to the Cowboys, famously saying, “Texas Stadium has a hole in its roof so God can watch his favorite team play.”
The Dallas Cowboys have not yet announced any plans to honor Lewis during their Week 3 game.
The entire Cowboys organization and NFL community extend their deepest condolences to the Lewis family during this difficult time.
