**Veermalakunnu Hill in Kasaragod to Become Eco-Tourism Hotspot**

**Kasaragod, September 18, 2025:** Veermalakunnu, a picturesque hilltop in Kasaragod district known for its natural beauty, is set to be transformed into a thriving ecotourism destination. The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEFs) has greenlit an urban forest project spanning 38 acres of land under the Forest Department, aiming to capitalize on the hill’s tourism potential.

The project will be executed in two phases. While the Tourism Department focuses on developing over nine acres under the Kasaragod Development Package, the Forest Department will implement ecotourism initiatives on its land through Forest Conservation Committees.

Divisional Forest Officer K. Ashraf detailed the plans, stating that the 14 hectares under their jurisdiction would be developed in strict adherence to MoEFs guidelines. “The government has allocated ₹4 lakh a hectare. We have proposed to develop 14 hectares, and ₹36 lakh has been approved as the first installment,” he explained.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) and a working plan are currently under preparation. The project envisions replacing the existing acacia trees with native and fruit-bearing species, constructing scenic walkways, and erecting a watchtower for panoramic views. To preserve the natural integrity of the area, large-scale construction will be restricted.

“The project will transform the hill into a beautiful destination for both local residents and tourists,” Mr. Ashraf emphasized. Veermalakunnu is already celebrated for its stunning natural landscape, boasting slopes that burst into a vibrant carpet of flowers during August and September. Visitors can also enjoy breathtaking views of the Neeleswaram river and its iconic bridge from the hilltop.

With opportunities for family outings, light trekking, and rappelling, Veermalakunnu is poised to become a popular destination for both leisure and adventure seekers alike. The project promises to further enhance its appeal and establish it as a must-visit ecotourism hotspot in the region.
