Bengaluru, India – The Karnataka government is scrambling to address growing concerns over the city’s deteriorating infrastructure after a prominent logistics firm announced its decision to relocate from the city due to traffic congestion and poor road conditions.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, Minister for Bengaluru Development and Town Planning, assured the public that the government is committed to resolving these issues and preventing further business departures. His remarks come amid rising criticism of the Congress government over the poor state of Bengaluru’s roads, exacerbated by the recent announcement from BlackBuck CEO Rajesh Yabaji regarding the company’s relocation plans.
Yabaji cited commute times exceeding 1.5 hours and neglected road conditions as key factors in the decision. His announcement sparked widespread concern among the business community and residents, with many echoing his sentiments on social media.
“We have to serve the people of the state. Take this on record, no one will leave Bengaluru,” stated Deputy CM Shivakumar.
In response, Mr. Shivakumar acknowledged the challenges posed by Bengaluru’s rapid growth. He emphasized the government’s plans to integrate areas currently under panchayats into the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to streamline civic responses and improve infrastructure management. He also highlighted the allocation of funds and deadlines set for road repair projects.
The Deputy CM also announced that 112 km of flyovers and 44 km of elevated double-decker roads are under construction.
While acknowledging the right of businesses to relocate, Mr. Shivakumar defended Bengaluru’s unique advantages and infrastructure. He also criticized opposition parties for not advocating for additional funding from the central government.
