**Commanders Consider Reunion with Veteran Pass Rusher Preston Smith Amid Injury Woes**

**Ashburn, VA** – The Washington Commanders are exploring a potential reunion with former second-round pick Preston Smith, who visited the team’s facility today, according to ESPN’s Field Yates. The move comes on the heels of a season-ending quad injury to defensive end Deatrich Wise, leaving a gap in the team’s pass-rushing depth.

Smith, drafted by Washington in 2015, spent four seasons with the team before joining the Green Bay Packers in 2019. While he didn’t quite live up to his draft billing in his first stint in Washington, he proved to be a consistent presence on the defensive line. His rookie year saw him rack up 8 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. He hit his stride in Green Bay, posting a career-high 12 sacks in his first season with the Packers and notching 25.5 sacks between 2021 and 2023.

After being traded midseason to the Steelers in 2024, Smith played a part-time role, finishing the year with 32 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Released by Pittsburgh in February, he’s remained a free agent.

The Commanders are looking to bolster their defensive line with veteran experience, with newcomers Jacob Martin and Von Miller expected to step up alongside Dorance Armstrong and Javontae Jean-Baptiste. Smith’s familiarity with the organization and his proven track record could make him a valuable addition.

In addition to Smith, defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson, who split the 2024 season with the Browns and Bills, also visited the Commanders today. The Commanders could be rebuilding an older team of seasoned veterans as both Smith and Jefferson are over 30.
