**Dubai, UAE** – Tensions are high within the Pakistan cricket camp at the Asia Cup 2025 after the team abruptly cancelled a scheduled pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of their match against the UAE. This follows the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s rejection of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)’s request to remove match referee Andy Pycroft from the tournament panel.
The PCB alleges that Pycroft played a key role in a “handshake” controversy during Pakistan’s Group A match against India, reportedly instructing Pakistani captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with his Indian counterpart, Suryakumar Yadav, at the toss. The PCB lodged a formal complaint with the ICC, but the request to remove Pycroft was denied.
Sources within the Pakistan team indicated that the cancellation of the press conference was intended to avoid questions regarding a potential team pullout, a threat reportedly made in response to the ICC’s decision on Pycroft.
While some reports suggest Pakistan threatened to boycott their match against UAE if Pycroft was not removed, the team has not confirmed whether they will participate in the tournament. However, according to a report by the Times Of India, the Pakistan players will attend the practice session today.
Despite the threat, a complete withdrawal from the Asia Cup appears unlikely. Sources within the PCB suggest the board is wary of the heavy sanctions the ICC, led by Jay Shah, could impose, especially given the PCB’s current financial situation after recent stadium renovations for the Champions Trophy.
“If we do that, ICC… will put heavy sanctions on the PCB, and this is something our board cannot afford,” a PCB source told the Times of India. “The financial situation… is not good.”
The ICC confirmed late Monday night that Pycroft would remain on the referee panel, further fueling the controversy. The situation remains fluid, and the cricketing world awaits confirmation on Pakistan’s participation in their upcoming match.
